As pet cancer awareness month concludes, we wanted to highlight our efforts to combat cancer in dogs. From the research and contribution of Dr. John Yannelli and Dr. Don Cohen – each celebrated in our previous blog posts this month, Ardent was able to develop a new path for pet parents to choose when dealing with the difficult and heartbreaking diagnosis of cancer in their beloved furry friend.

What is K9-ACV

K9-ACV stands for Canine Autologous Cancer Vaccine. Using the therapeutic approach of immunotherapy, our scientists have developed a cancer vaccine, created personally for your pet that can be incorporated in your pet’s cancer treatment plan. Our hope is that K9-ACV will improve and extend the quality of life for your dog. K9-ACV is designed for all operable canine tumors.

What Type of Cancers Can It Be Used For?

To date, dogs with a variety of tumor types including but not limited to:

  • Oral cancers
  • Bone cancer
  • Skin cancers
  • Nasal cancers
  • Cancers of the internal organs
  • Soft tissue cancers
  • Mammary tumors
  • And more!

What’s The Process For Receiving K9-ACV For My Dog?

K9-ACV is designed for all resectable canine tumors. When determining if dogs are candidates for the vaccine, your veterinarian must consider several factors. Once they decide that K9-ACV is right for your dog, there are 4 steps that follow.

  1. Step 1: Your vet will surgically remove the tumor and ship it overnight to our lab.
  2. Step 2: Receive diagnosis within 72 hours of using Ardent’s pathology service.
  3. Step 3: Our lab team will process the tumor sample and extract the tumor cells to prepare a 3-dose vaccine.
  4. Step 4: The finished vaccine is shipped overnight back to your veterinarian and is administered every 30 days.

Contact your veterinarian to find out if K9-ACV is an option for your dog.

What side effects could occur?

K9-ACV is not a drug. We do not expect any major side effects to occur. During the first 48 hours, your pet may experience a mild fever, sleepiness, or loss of appetite. Owners may observe that the vaccine administration sites become slightly inflamed with minor redness and swelling near where the vaccine was injected although this is expected to subside quickly.

Words From a Veterinarian

“At the age of seven, a tumor was found on Ella’s spleen, and biopsy results determined she was diagnosed with having a high-grade sarcoma. Patients with this type of tumor have an average survival time after surgery between one and two months. Statistically, Ella should not have lived past May but after receiving K9-ACV, it has been over one year after treatment and Ella is happy and healthy with no signs of cancer.”

Angie Cabeza, DVM

We are grateful to our veterinary partners who administer our immunotherapy to pet patients in their area. We look forward to continuing our work with them as well as expanding to more clinics across the country so that each pet can receive new and innovative treatment options, putting an end to the helpless feeling that comes after receiving a devastating diagnosis.
